Katie Rafferty initially became a member of the YMCA of Central Kentucky in the fall of 2023 with a couple of very specific goals in mind. "I had become interested in multi-sport events, but only felt comfortable cycling and running. So, I decided to join the Y to take swim classes, and planned to complete my first triathlon at the Philip Cullen Memorial Indoor Tri at the North Y." Having been running with friends for a few years, she had a good baseline of activity, and, in addition to improving her swimming and competing as a triathlete, she was generally interested in her overall well-being. She is finding that "overall well-being" encompasses both her physical health, but also other aspects as well. "I continue to stay because I have found a supportive and welcoming community that continues to encourage me. The Y has helped me find a sense of belonging and community that is rare and hard to find. The positive and welcoming atmosphere keeps me coming back for more and keeps me feeling motivated to dream bigger and achieve things I didn't imagine were possible for myself. Who knew that I'd like swimming, let alone be halfway decent at it! I may not be setting any records, or impressing more experienced athletes, but I have surpassed my expectations by a lot and I could not be more proud of myself."
One of the new things Katie has tried is group fitness. "I love TRX with Brianna; her energy and positivity is infectious! Blast of the Day is also great! I still love swimming at the Y, but I also love trying new classes and meeting new people! I continue to be amazed at all the Y has to offer."
When she's not swimming, running, or in classes at the YMCA, Katie pursues her artistic interests like drawing, painting and crocheting; she also enjoys traveling, reading, and cuddling with her dog. She thinks of the Y as a place that is supportive, encouraging, fun - perfect for a member who joined with a goal in mind, got involved to make it happen, and indeed achieved it. "The Phillip Cullen Memorial Indoor Triathlon was excellent! This year was my first year participating, and my first tri ever! This was great for a beginner and was so fun with a great cheer squad! I felt like everyone was cheering specifically for me! I will absolutely keep this race on my calendar to do next year and beyond!"
We are so proud of Katie for everything she has accomplished, and for having the courage to try new things, meet new people, and share her own experience. We look forward to cheering her on next year in her second Philip Cullen Memorial Triathlon, and in classes and around the Y in the meantime!
