The YMCA's Diabetes Prevention Program helps those at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles by eating healthier, increasing physical activity and losing a modest amount of weight in order to reduce their chances of developing the disease.
This is a 12-month program consisting of 16 core sessions followed by monthly maintenance sessions. For more program or financial assistance information, contact us.
All program participants receive a FREE individual membership to the YMCA of Central Kentucky during the core sessions of the program.
Based on research led by the National Institutes of Health, the YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program reduces the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58%.
To qualify for the program, individuals must be overweight and at high risk for developing diabetes or overweight and have been diagnosed by a physician as someone with prediabetes.
The participant will then need to have two of the following seven conditions:
1. High Cholesterol
2. High Blood Pressure
3. Being physically active 2 or less days per week
4. Being diagnosed with prediabetes by a physician
5. Having had gestational diabetes or having had a baby weighing more than nine pounds at birth
6. Being 45 years of age or older
7. Having a parent or sibling who is/was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes
