For many, summer day camp is an entry point into the YMCA; that's not just for youth - it is true for staff sometimes, too. Chris Armstead had not previously been a Y member, but as a camp counselor quickly found a place where he was engaged, making a difference, and earning compliments from camper parents and the CEO alike. His supervisor, regional operations director of youth development Lindsey Browning observes, "I really appreciate the efforts he goes through to connect to kids to make their experience a great one. He has grown tremendously in his leadership abilities, and seeing his patience working alongside kids with different needs is really cool to see."
Chris - or "Mr. Chris" as he is affectionately known to the kids - has also felt some of that growth. "I have learned a lot of new things from being at the Y," he shares. "There is a lot that goes into running a program - more than you might know." He would know, though - in just over a year with the organization, Chris has been a camp counselor, sports referee, a counselor, and an assistant director of an afterschool site. Now as a full-time youth activities coordinator, his summer focus as camp director has given him more responsibility - and perspective. He elaborates on his experience: "I appreciate the safe environment and the support that is offered from everyone in the building. Being with the Y has opened my eyes to the real world of opportunities." Chris channels this energy in turn by being available to his campers. "The kids excite me. Every time I walk into the Y and a kid sees me, they have the biggest smile on their face, and it makes my day. Making a kid's day is what I work for."
When Mr. Chris isn't working, he is still staying very active: he collects/trades shoes, and is an avid basketball, corn hole, and spike ball player. It's natural, then, that having an impact every day in his job feels to him "like I just won the NBA championship. I cannot wait to continue my journey."
While Chris is still early in his YMCA career, he already sees it as a place of "opportunity, home, and development. It changed my life by welcoming me in with open arms. Everyone is welcome and no one is judged. The Y is family."
