For Kyle Stepter, his Y story began as employee. He has grown into his current role as the aquatics director at the Whitaker Family YMCA - first as a lifeguard (it was "a privilege", he says) and then as aquatics coordinator. He also likes to be involved in the YMCA's sports as a ref and site supervisor for soccer leagues. Kyle reflects on these seven years of growth and changing roles, sharing that, "the YMCA has been very influential not only on my work but my personal life as well. It has given me a career path that I never thought imaginable. It has also shown me what I value most in this world and has given me a sense of purpose. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing kids learn how to swim or be a part of their first sports team."
In addition to appreciating how the Y supports youth in our community, he also embraces the broader perspective. "My favorite thing about being a part of this organization is the sheer impact we have. I love that our teen and adult members have a safe space to come and talk with others and have that community of support and shared interests. I love just being able to meet new people and get to hear their stories. I find comfort in the thought of them being open enough to share things about themselves and their lives. I enjoy forming those unexpected connections - as long as you're willing to listen!"
Kyle's experience and reflections seem perfectly summed up by the three things that come to mind when he thinks of the Y: community, development, and of course water (and lots of it). "I value the time spent here at the YMCA and look forward to continuing to invest in it."
When he's not working, you can catch Kyle enjoying his newfound hobby of golf, on the soccer field, or out and about trying new foods.
We love seeing emerging leaders like Kyle grow into new responsibilities at the Y. We looking forward to continuing to see his Y journey unfold as he makes an impact on our members and participants. Thanks, Kyle, for all you do!
