Janie Bush moved to Lexington in the fall of 2024. She and her husband had just relocated from Texas to be closer to family following his retirement. New house, new city, new chapter.

But what was supposed to be an exciting transition quickly felt overwhelming.

"I fell into a depression and anxiety I couldn't overcome," said Janie.

Looking for something that might help her find solid ground, Janie joined the Whitaker Family YMCA. Unsure but hopeful, she began showing up, easing into a new routine with time on the elliptical.

Then, one day someone suggested, "Try Yoga."

She gave it a try, with instructors Mary and Colleen guiding her through breath work that soon became her lifeline.

Next came Zumba with Brianna. "Her energy lifted my spirits."

Then, High Fitness with Amber. "Do what you can — just keep moving," they encouraged her.

Next came Barre and pickleball. Janie just kept saying "yes" and showing up — weights, the walking track, personal training, and every class in between. No setback could keep her from walking through those Y doors and embracing every opportunity to move.

Now a regular, Janie can often be found tending her flowers, laughing with her grandkids, or enjoying fellowship with friends. But most days, you'll find her at the Y — moving, smiling, and connecting.

She loves that the Y truly offers something for everyone. "If someone says they're bored by the Y, they're not trying."

Her advice to others? Keep showing up. "You don't have to be perfect to participate. The opportunities are endless."

"YMCA, you are a huge part of our lives. Thank you for saving me."

Janie, we're so grateful you're part of our Y family. Your journey shows how powerful community, support, and movement can be. This is what makes the Y special — a place where every step forward matters and every member's story inspires.
